A proud grandmother shows her newborn grandchild

A custom in India with the newborn children is to paint some marks as a way to protect them against the evil eye and the evil spirits. They believe that newborns, infants and toddlers are seen as perfect and are more likely to attract evil spirits. In those cases, to make their appearance more imperfect they paint their eyes and make spots on their cheeks to frighten the "demons."
